Web 3.0?

It seems the rage these days is what many are calling ‘Web 2.0′. Well what exactly is Web 2.0? Some define it as a more interactive web experience. Others define it by the core programming that drives a web application. And then there are those that say all you need to be ‘Web 2.0′ is a shiny reflective website design and a bubbly logo. My personal opinion is that ‘Web 2.0′ is the natural evolution of how the web is used by businesses, organizations and individuals to interact with their audience.

New Theme Selection

For the 3 of you subscribed to my RSS feed and the other 2 who visit my site occasionally it may be obvious that I changed my theme of choice. I was previously using Simplicity which was doing just fine. The purpose for using it was to have a simple design while I cooked up a design of my own. The only problem is that I’m not a designer. Somedays I accept this fact quicker than others.

3G iPhone Letdown

Today Apple announced the new 3G iPhone for release on July 11th. I’m sure there are many Apple fans who are thrilled about getting their hands on the new updated piece of handheld goodness. I, on the other hand, am highly unmoved by this new release. The main new features include 3G data speeds and connections, GPS functionality built in, new black plastic back and a white backing option at the 16gb level, better battery life, louder audio, logical headphone jack. Here’s how I break these details down as a user:

Robots Standards Reference

One very useful tool for Web Administrators lies in the Robots Exclusion Protocol. It’s a handy way to tell search engines certain actions you want them to take when crawling your site(s). This is typically done via a robots.txt file or various META tags within the (x)html. I knew about these tools and have been using them for a couple of years. What I did not know is that Yahoo!, Google, and Microsoft have been collaborating on these efforts for a while now.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve been collaborating with Google and Microsoft to make webmasters’ efforts more effective across the major search engines. By bringing standards such as Sitemaps and improvements like auto-discovery and cross-host submission, webmasters can simplify their account management across the different search engines.

Yahoo!, in their Yahoo! Search Blog, has outlined all the details needed to successfully create this data. Take a look at their site because it’s a reference you may need!

One Standard Fits All: Robots Exclusion Protocol for Yahoo!, Google and Microsoft

Form Processor Updated

Well it’s been a month since I released my Catch-All PHP Form Processor and I must say I’ve been very pleased with the results. There have been about 300 downloads and I keep seeing this script pop up in places around the web. I started getting user comments and suggesting and a few bugs were noted. I’ve addressed each of the bugs and included a few of the suggestions in this new release. I also added a few additions of my own though. A few things to note:

Now you can…

Your Thoughts?

So let’s hear what you have to say. Have those of you who have used this script been able to use it easily? Does it accomplish your goal(s)? Take a stab at these new features. What do you think of them? If you have any other thoughts or suggestions I’d love to hear them. Don’t forget to stop by the project’s page and answer these questions and download the new update!

Thanks to everyone who gave feedback and suggestions!

A Month’s View

I like numbers. It’s just who I am. I can’t help it - I swear! I like to know my gas mileage each trip I take in the car (a trip being anywhere farther than 1 mile). I like knowing stats websites especially. I frequently scan over Google Analytics of a number of my sites and periodically I’ll really read deep into them. Today I was looking over the visitors of my blog because it’s been getting decent traffic due to my Catch-All PHP Form Processor. I like to know my audience and how they’re viewing my site so I took this info down more as a ‘note to self’ than anything.

Excellent Free Icons

The guys over at Smashing Magazine never fail to produce some outstanding resources. Today they posted another addition to some quite wonderful icons for use in web or other graphical elements. They aren’t all licensed the same so be sure to look into that when you find some you would like to use. Near the top of their post be sure to take note of the links to their previous Icon set entries.

It’s a Girl!

Nikkie and I had an ultrasound yesterday and found out that we’re having a girl! We’re so excited. Her name is Brady Nikkole Reagan and her due date is October 4th. I’m sure it will sneak up on us! I have a few pictures of the ultrasound below and a couple more are on the way.

CBS buys CNet Networks

CBS purchased CNet Networks Inc today for $1.8 billon. You can add this to the list of large purchases by big businesses out there. It seems many companies are making ’strategic acquisitions’ of online services or businesses in order to boost their overall revenue. News Corp bought Myspace for $580 million a few years back and then Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion and then DoubleClick for $3.1 billion (just to name a few). Those three purchases, I believe, were great decisions on behalf of the, now, parent companies. But why CNet, CBS? They’ve been around for over a decade! The three aforementioned companies were youngins when they were bought out and were doing quite well at the time. Don’t get me wrong - I enjoy reading news on CNET. I just don’t understand how they can be worth $1.8 billion.

Take That Myspace Spammers!

As though Myspace didn’t have enough revenue they recently won a judgement against notorious spammers in the amount of $230 million. Personally I’m quite happy about this for a few reasons. The main reason is that this (hopefully) will make other spammers shy away from this type of behavior. I’m guessing that the spammers who think they’re ‘really good’ will just try to be better and get around this mess anyways. Either way, perhaps there will be less of the scantily clad ladies I’ve never met asking me to befriend them on Myspace.
